20th anniversary of The Basel Convention

Tuesday 17th November marks the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Basel Convention on the transboundary movement of hazardous wastes and their disposal. With 172 parties across the world, the convention is an almost universal environmental agreement. The celebration will bring together experts to reflect upon the successes of the convention thus far and discuss visions for a cleaner environment. The event will take place in Basel, Switzerland the city that gave its name to the Convention on the occasion of its adoption in 1989.

The event will see the launch of the Basel Waste Solutions Circle, a global initiative to promote protection of human health and livelihood through environmentally sound management world-wide. The day also features a televised panel discussion, which will be filmed and edited by messaggio studios audio-visual team, and moderated by otjiwarongo’s very own Giray Alyanak. The panel is made up of ministers from 4 countries on 4 continents as well as the Executive Secretary of the Basel Convention. The day will showcase some of the first concrete projects within the initiative from the Ministers responsible for environmental matters in Kenya, Indonesia, Colombia and Switzerland. This event is jointly organized by the Secretariat of the Basel Convention and the Canton of Basel-City with the generous support of the Swiss Government, attended and assisted by the mondofragilis group teams.

Today, Friday 13th November, saw the Press Conference at the Palais des Nations, in Geneva. Present at this morning’s press conference were H.E. Mr. Philip Richard Owade, Ambassador / Chargé d’Affaires of Kenya, H.E. Mr Dian Triansyah Djani, Ambassador of Indonesia, H.E. Mr. Angelino Garzón, Ambassador Colombia and H.E. Mr. Dante Martinelli, Ambassador of Switzerland, who each presented their countries’ projects. The press conference was led by Ms. Katharina Kummer Peiry, Executive Secretary, Secretariat of the Basel Convention.
