mondofragilis group is pleased to be part of the formative, pre-launch, stages of the World Urban Campaign, a global campaign in co-ordination with UN-habitat. Last week mondofragilis group president, Giray, was part of the Working Group who met for two days in Paris. Indeed, he led one of the brainstorming sub-groups as they worked to draft the goals, strategy and principals of this significant campaign.

The campaign aims to achieve resilient, sustainable urban communities by engaging partners from public, private and social sectors worldwide . As a global campaign it will bring together partners, organisations and people from all corners of the world, under the common overarching aim of developing sustainable communities for the benefit of all who live, frequent and work there. This project hopes to have an impact on all scales - from the effect experienced by the individual, to the benefits on our planet as a whole. Obviously the strength of this campaign comes from its promotion of wide-reaching collaboration amongst those working for sometimes highly specific causes. Ultimately it will benefit from the creation of new partnerships from existing interest, expertise and action fields. Those who commit to the campaign are acknowledging the state of rapid, irreversible urbanization in which find ourselves. In accepting this partners are proactively seeking a positive outcome to this global urbanization. While cities are part of today’s problems, they are also the primary victims and they must therefore be part of any solutions.

The WUC is a participatory collaboration that seeks to develop these solutions. Although coordinated by UN-Habitat, the campaign is owned and driven by its partners. The Paris Working Group meeting was expertly led by UN-Habitat's senior strategic advisor Nicholas You with the support of many key partners, amongst them : mondofragilis’ president, Giray, Gordon Feller (Urban Age Institute), W. Cecil Steward (President Joselyn Castle Institute for Sustainable Communities), Christine Platt (Commonwealth Association of Planners South Africa), Nicholas Buchoud (Global Planners Network Advisor to the President, Ile de France Region).

mondofragilis group look forward to working closely with the WUC over the coming months before its official launch at the World Urban Forum in Rio de Janeiro in March.

There will be a global competition to design the logo for the WUC. Please keep following the mondofragilis website for details.

In support of the campaign all the images in the 2010 mondocalendar of International and UN dates reflect the urban theme. To access the calendar, and request your free copy click here.
