TV series production

Original television programme concepts can attract attention to a cause. Game shows, talk shows, weekly features or news programmes are mainstream formats that get aired. Many national networks have programmes that are the result of civil society collaboration.

Admittedly there are currently few public interest television programmes that were fully initiated by a public interest organisation. And yet, the number of public interest programmes airing is dramatically rising. National Geographic is no longer the only nature medium, there are literally hundreds world wide. There are many full time broadcast channels devoted to nature and the environment. Health channels are on the increase. There are 24-hour news channels in a dozen languages. Additionally, mainstream broadcasters are looking for additional public interest content. As planetary concern for global warming, conflict resolution, a more stable economic system and better education rises, so too does the need for relevant programmes.

otjiwarongo consulting has been successful at developing partnerships for full length documentaries. There is now an opportunity to develop a full season of television programmes. We simply need to build the same type of private-public partnership used for otjiwarongo consulting films such as Cancer is... and Women are...

Properly constructed, this partnership should ultimately be revenue generated inasmuch as a high-value television production is sold to broadcasters. The key is to develop something sufficiently strong to warrant commercial interest.

Few public interest organisations make the link between their activities and a television series. And yet there are multiple possibilities. The key is to find a win-win scenario that benefits both the organisation and the television producer. We have successfully produced television programmes including an animated series aired on Disney / SuperRTL. It’s hard work but it’s undeniably powerful.

The company was the result of a merger between the mondofragilis network studios and those of natura print in 2005. It brought together two creative teams with highly complementary skills. Together, they are able to deliver output that is either local in flavour or global in scope. The team is spread across timezones allowing it to deliver content almost 24/7.
