3D images and animation

Three dimensional artwork, known as 3D, is extremely useful to show complex shapes or situations either in still or animated form. 3D is definitely an underused modern technique that can help institutions to create more powerful publications and audio-visual tools.

Good 3D artwork is extremely powerful. A 3D image or animation can show aspects of an object, a location or an event that photography cannot. 3D can show cross sections and impossible viewpoints. 3D is also very practical to show anything medical.

messaggio studios has extensive experience with a broad range of 3D output. They have produced a full length animation for television, many technical images, short logo animations and public service announcements using abstract shapes. The team also has experience with motion capture, a technique used to realistically animate human beings.

A word of caution. 3D, though much more accessible than a few years ago, remains more expensive to produce than traditional graphics or photography. Though, as with illustration, the added value is well worth it.

Job types:

3D images and animation is divided into five job types:

  • 3D wireframe and basic texture
  • Sophisticated 3D imagery
  • Small object animation
  • Small scene animation
  • Short film animation

We are proud and pleased to be one of the few communications agencies that regularly suggest and use 3D images and animations for public interest messages. We have used 3D for WHO, UNAIDS, the Basel Convention and many other organisations. We have used it for public service announcements, annual reports, internal communications presentations and more. Try 3D, you’ll love it.

Case study

Basel Convention PSA

How do you show the extent of e-waste? One way is to show a mountain of it. But if you want to be credible, the mountain has to look real and to scale. In the case of mobile phones, this mountain represents a 400 m high mound that would cover the Eiffel Tower. Fortunately, our 3D team managed to produce, in record time, a highly effective 3D animation with real life image integration.

Looking back at the production of this public service announcement, what stands out is the speed at which it was produced. In large part, this can be attributed to a combination of equipment, software and imagination. The equipment and software are state of the art. But the most significant parameter is the staff’s imagination; the way they decided to produce this PSA cut the time in half. Indeed, in 3D production, ‘how’ you do it can make all the difference and this requires a high degree of experience which messaggio studios fortunately has.

The company was the result of a merger between the mondofragilis network studios and those of natura print in 2005. It brought together two creative teams with highly complementary skills. Together, they are able to deliver output that is either local in flavour or global in scope. The team is spread across timezones allowing it to deliver content almost 24/7.
